Young Carers in Schools is becoming
Young Carers in Education

In April 2027, Young Carers in Schools will become Young Carers in Education.

The new name marks the next stage of the programme, while keeping young carers and their experiences at the heart of everything we do.

Thanks to National Lottery players, Carers Trust has received almost £5 million over five years from The National Lottery Community Fund to expand support for young carers in education across England, Scotland and Wales.

Delivered jointly by Carers Trust and The Children’s Society, Young Carers in Education will remain a free award programme that helps education settings identify and support young carers more effectively. It will provide practical guidance, resources and recognition to strengthen understanding, embed a consistent whole-setting approach and help young carers feel seen, heard and supported.

The programme will be available to a wider range of education settings, including primary and secondary schools, multi-academy trusts, sixth forms and post-16 provision.

From April 2027, an updated brand, website, Award framework and assessment criteria will make the programme clearer, more accessible and easier to engage with. These improvements have been shaped by young carers, education settings and local carer services.
